¿Qué está pasando en La Jonquera? / What’s happening in La Jonquera?

Hace un par de semanas me tocó hacer un reportaje en La Jonquera, un pequeño pueblo catalán junto a la frontera con Francia. A primera vista no parece tener nada extraordinario… una calle principal, muchos camiones, supermercados y sí, desde hace tiempo es famosa por sus burdeles y prostitución callejera; pero la verdad es que esto no es tan anormal en las ciudades fronterizas.

Pero hace dos años abrió el Paradise, un macroprostíbulo (el más grande de Europa) y las cosas han cambiado, al punto que ha estallado una guerra de mafias que toca su punto más crítico con la colocación de un coche bomba frente a este burdel gigante. Cuando llegamos al pueblo, no encontramos nada raro… pero cuando empezamos a hacer preguntas nos dimos cuenta de la situación: nadie quería hablar, ni la policía, ni los habitantes del lugar, ni los dueños de los prostíbulos ni las chicas tampoco. Además casi siempre en actitud hostil, especialmente en los clubs. Era una mezcla de miedo con hastío hacia los medios de comunicación…

Al final nos fuimos con muy poca información, si saber a ciencia cierta qué pasa en La Jonquera y con dos frases que fueron las que más recuerdo: “La Jonquera es como el viejo oeste, acá no hay ley” (dicho por un policía)  y “y ojalá que pase otra noticia importante para que la gente se olvide de La Jonquera” (dicho por el dueño de un burdel).

A couple of weeks ago I had to make an reportage in La Jonquera, a little Catalonian town next to the border with France. At first sight it’s not that special… just a main road, lots of trucks, supermarkets and yes, for some time is famous for its brothels and street prostitution; but the truth is that this is not that weird in border cities.

But two years ago Paradise opened, a megabrothel (the biggest in Europe) and things have changed, to the point that now there is a turf war between gangs being the most critical point the placement of a car bomb in front of this giant brothel. When we arrived to the place  we didn’t find anything that strange… but we started to make questions we found out the real situation: nobody wanted to talk, not even the police, not even the local people, not even the brothels owners and neither the girls. And most of the times they were hostile, specially in the clubs. It was a mix of fear with having enough of the media…

At the end we left with almost no information at all, not knowing what’s happening in La Jonquera and with two quotes that I remember the most: “La Jonquera is like the Wild, Wild West, there’s no law” (told by a policeman) and “I hope that another important new happens soon so people could forget about La Jonquera” (told by a brothel owner).
